A Tale of Two Horses

Image
Within my mustang herd is a tiny horse with a big attitude - Cloud. Cloud has been my constant companion for nearly thirteen years. When I was just seven, my parents (not knowing that older horses are better for younger people) bought me Cloud, who was a spunky, headstrong five-month-old colt. He was (and still is) very spicy! Unfortunately, none of us realized that horses need companions of their own species, so Cloud lived by himself next to an assortment of farm animals for almost eleven years. However, he still had a fun life as I spent a lot of time with him every day and took him for long walks. I'm sure that when Alamo jumped off the trailer onto our property he couldn't believe his eyes. He did not know what he was in for! Since then, Cloud has been the first horse to meet each mustang, and I plan to keep it that way. When he meets a gelding, he does his best to strike an intimidating pose, kicking and screaming at them. It seems like an attempt to establish his dominan...

Update on the Cumberland Island Wild Horses

Image
It's been nearly ten months since the lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) began, which subsequently began my campaign to save Cumberland Island's Wild Horses.  I launched a petition in April, which now has 1,800+ signatures.  I began visiting the island regularly and recently released a document on my observations and research there.  Visiting Cumberland Island gave me a fun opportunity to film episodes which I've posted on Mustang Mission's Patreon!  I continue to learn so much about the horses and the beautiful island they inhabit. Over the past several months, I have communicated with the NPS.  Currently, they cannot discuss the horses due to the litigation, but have been open to hearing about my research. I have also sent my research to the person over the lawsuit and asked if we could discuss the horses again (we had a long conversation in spring).  I was told that there was no interest in speaking to me. One of the projects I've been worki...

Rocket Moves to His New Home!

Image
There has been a lot of change here at Mustang Mission as Rocket’s time with me has come to an end.  I knew it was going to be hard to part with Rocket, so I did many fun and memorable things with him in the days before he left.  I also had to take some nice photos of him for my 2024 Mustang Mission Calendar… The MacDonald’s came early in the morning so I could go over some last things with Rocket’s training.  Rocket did great - I was so happy with him! It was a bit difficult to load Rocket onto the trailer, but he traveled so well!  I wanted to be with Rocket when he made the transition to a new home, so my family joined me in following the MacDonalds to their farm.  I was happy to be able to watch Rocket the whole time and could tell that he stayed relaxed much of the time. Rocket settled in so quickly!  He absolutely loved the grass and looking out over the fields.  The other horses on the property were eager to meet Rocket and since Rocket needed a...

Ember is Available for Adoption!

Image
Ember is available for adoption!  This is your chance to own a very special little mustang!  Ember is great on the ground and has been started lightly undersaddle.  She is very well desensitized and absolutely loves people, attention, activity, and adventures.  She is very easy to handle and works hard to please people.  Ember is very good with children and has been a part of my family’s farm field trips for children.  She is easygoing, gentle, fun, curious, and brave - with a bit of spice! 😁 Ember is from the Goshute HMA (Herd Management Area) in Nevada.  She is 13hh and would be best suited for a smaller rider.  Despite her size, though, she is very strong and has a long stride!  Instead of listing all that Ember can do, I’ve made a video for you to watch ! Ember’s adoption fee is $2,000.  If you are interested in Ember, you can fill out our adoption application .  Or, email me at mustangmissionrescue@gmail.com if you have any qu...

Help me with training mustangs!

Image
Throughout the past two years, I have obtained all the online knowledge I can about gentling and training mustangs, but have never been able to do hands-on training with an experienced mustang trainer.  I have learned so much from the mustangs I've been training, but I know that I need to do better for them.  I want to be sure that I clearly communicate with them when I'm training them, and that I never cause confusion or fear.  There are a few issues I've experienced that would be extremely helpful to have an experienced trainer help me through. This September, I have the opportunity to learn from one of America's most popular and talented mustang trainers, Sam VanFleet.  She would spend a day teaching me as I work with my mustangs.  It is incredibly important to me to make this happen.  It would make a huge difference in the lives of all the mustangs that I train and help them as they transition to life in a domesticated world. However, this training oppo...

Watch My Interview with Dr. Karen Becker!

Image
I’m so excited to share this interview with you!  Recently, I was nominated for and received Dr. Karen Becker’s Game Changer Award.  As a recipient of the award, Dr. Becker interviewed me about America's Wild Horses and Burros and the work I'm doing to save them.  The video was just released last week! You can read the article and watch the video on Dr. Becker’s website .  Please take some time to look through her articles, as well.  She’s a fantastic veterinarian with a holistic approach to veterinary care.  My family and I have learned so much from her!
